Stand Up for Your Health

standWhile we know that extensive sitting is not good for our physical health, studies are proving that sitting for too long may be detrimental to our mental health as well. Women who sit for more than seven hours per day were found to have a 47% higher risk of depression than women who sit for four hours per day or less. The risk is relevant to children too, as those who sit for long hours in front of the TV or computer experience more problems like anxiety, depression and poor self-esteem.*

You can minimize the damaging effects of sitting for too long by making standing and stretching a part of your daily routine. Commit to getting up and stretching ideally every 15 minutes, or at least at the top of every hour. Also, monitor your children and encourage them to get involved in physical activities like games and sports.
