Plums Reduce Anxiety

923Plums are packed with vitamins A and C, but did you know that they can also help your body absorb iron? If you tend to have anxiety, try eating more plums as they contain an antioxidant called chlorogenic acid. Chlorogenic acid gives off a calming effect and may help reduce your anxiety.*

Add some anxiety-reducing plums to your snacking routine. Both fresh and dried plums pack powerful phytonutrients like chlorogenic acid, and both varieties are easy to eat on the go!

Try Yoga for Irregular Heartbeat

758In a study published by the American College of Cardiology, people with atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeats) showed symptom improvements by engaging in yoga. After three months of regular sessions, participants noted both lower heart rates and lower blood pressure. This is great news for the 2.7 million Americans who experience atrial fibrillation, especially when considering that conventional therapy can be very expensive. As an added bonus, participants from the study also reported experiencing less depression and anxiety.*

For free yoga sessions, search for instructional videos online that you can do at home. Also, keep in mind that many studios offer “new student discounts” so enjoy exploring the different yoga houses in your community at a smaller starter rate.

Kava Root for Anxiety and Stress

737Derived from the Pacific Islands, Kava root has been used for years as a natural remedy for anxiety. Medical studies are now proving the same benefit; after three weeks participants of a Kava root study reported that they were experiencing less anxiety without any serious side effects. This is good news for those with anxiety that turn to prescriptive drugs like Valium and Xanax, both of which come with a long list of damaging side effects.*

To avoid liver complications only take Kava in its safest form – as a concentrated extract. Visit your local health store and seek out capsule, liquid, or tablet forms of Kava – just be sure that the labels read “root extract” and “water-soluble.”

Think Positively for Your Health

1466The average person experiences 50,000-70,000 thoughts per day. Out of those thousands of thoughts, how many are negative? Negative thinking does more than just bring down your mood, it can lead to unnecessary stress, anxiety, or depression. In one study, participants with the most cynical thoughts had an increased risk for developing dementia or heart disease later in life.*

Your mind can only process one thought at a time, so make an effort to hold onto only positive thoughts. When a negative thought enters your mind, practice replacing it with a more supportive or hopeful thought.

Learn to Breathe Deeply

1249Deep breathing exercises will help you feel calm, focused, and relaxed. Deep breathing is often used to battle anxiety, sleep problems, even general aches and pains. Start your deep breathing routine by expelling all of the air in your lungs out through your mouth, then slowly inhale through your nose, hold for seven seconds, and finally exhale again slowly out through your mouth. Repeat this cycle four times.*

Deep breathing tips include placing the tip of your tongue behind your front teeth and keeping it there throughout your practice. Making audible whooshing sounds when you exhale is also encouraged in the practice.

Relieve Pain with Acupuncture

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWidely practiced in China, acupuncture could be the holistic pain management you’ve been looking for. By deactivating parts of the brain in the limbic system (which is involved in pain perception) your pain symptoms may become deactivated too. Millions of Americans are now turning to acupuncture to relieve chronic pain, high blood pressure and nausea. It can also help with anxiety, stress and depression.*

Acupuncture can feel tingly and warm, but should not feel sharp. Check out holistic healing centers in your community, or ask your primary care doctor for a holistic referral to learn more about how acupuncture can help you.

Stand Up for Your Health

standWhile we know that extensive sitting is not good for our physical health, studies are proving that sitting for too long may be detrimental to our mental health as well. Women who sit for more than seven hours per day were found to have a 47% higher risk of depression than women who sit for four hours per day or less. The risk is relevant to children too, as those who sit for long hours in front of the TV or computer experience more problems like anxiety, depression and poor self-esteem.*

You can minimize the damaging effects of sitting for too long by making standing and stretching a part of your daily routine. Commit to getting up and stretching ideally every 15 minutes, or at least at the top of every hour. Also, monitor your children and encourage them to get involved in physical activities like games and sports.

Don’t Carry Your Cellphone Close

cellAn analysis of multiple studies is warning men that exposure to mobile phone radiation could possibly drop the quality of their sperm. The studies noted that radiation from cell phones lowered sperm mobility by 8% and viability by 9%. In light of these discoveries, men are being warned to be smart about their exposure and not carry their cell phones in their front pockets.*

Don’t let these warnings give you fertility anxiety. Remember it only takes one sperm to fertilize an egg. Still, suggestions like putting your cell phone in your back pocket, wearing loose-fitting underwear and doing your best to reduce stress will help men who want to conceive.
